Cleaning of a ROSY cylindrical heat economizer

Heat economizer cleaning, energy recovery and heat exchange improvement

Background :
AbitibiBowater’s Alma paper mill had a heat economizer that had gradually lost efficiency over several months. Even after two cleaning operations, heat recovery efficiency was still low. The optimization team in the Pulp and Fiber Department took on the case, analyzed the different aspects, and identified the problem: calcification of the equipment. GOTAR was called in to solve the problem.

Results :

Gotar-DPP500 and BO-8521 products were used in the cleaning procedure. The operation was carried out over a 12 hour period and successfully restored the equipment to optimum efficiency, just as if it were brand new again.

All silt and limestone deposits that were blocking the cold side were removed. Heat exchange optimization increased water heating (the water that flows towards the process). The use of a heat economizer allows for the recovery of the largest amount of KWh/day possible and stabilizes the use of the auxiliary water supply tank, keeping it at a more stable set point to avoid overflowing. The following tables explain the gains obtained.

The heat economizer manufacturer, Alpha Laval, confirmed that the cleaning operation restored the equipment to optimum working condition. In other words, it functions just like a brand new piece of equipment.
